## Question

Define Information System. Discuss different information system components. What are different quality requirements that an information system should possess?

## Short answer

An information system consists of hardware, software, data, network, people and procedures that process data into information. It must meet quality requirements: accuracy, timeliness, relevance, completeness, reliability, security, usability, flexibility, scalability, efficiency and maintainability.

## Answer

**Information System:** a set of interrelated components (people, hardware, software, data, networks, procedures) that collect, process, store and distribute information to support decision making, coordination and control in an organization.

#### Components of an information system
1. **Hardware** - computers, servers, storage, input/output devices.
2. **Software** - system software (OS, DBMS) and application software.
3. **Data** - raw facts that are stored and processed into information.
4. **Network / Telecommunication** - links (LAN, WAN, Internet) for sharing data and resources.
5. **People** - users, analysts, programmers, administrators and managers who run and use the system.
6. **Procedures** - rules, manuals and policies that describe how the system is used and controlled.

#### Quality requirements of an information system
- **Accuracy** - output is free from errors and reflects reality.
- **Timeliness** - information is available when needed.
- **Relevance** - information suits the decision at hand.
- **Completeness** - all needed information is present.
- **Reliability and availability** - system works consistently with little downtime.
- **Security** - protected against unauthorized access and loss; confidentiality and integrity are kept.
- **Usability** - easy to learn and use.
- **Flexibility and scalability** - can adapt to changing needs and growing load.
- **Efficiency and cost-effectiveness** - uses resources well.
- **Maintainability and integration** - easy to fix, upgrade and connect with other systems.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which set lists all components of an information system according to the answer?
   A. Hardware, software, data, network, people, profit
   B. Hardware, software, database only, users, budget, policy
   C. Hardware, software, data, network, people, procedures
   D. Input, output, storage, feedback, control, processing
Answer: C. The six components are hardware, software, data, network, people and procedures; input-processing-output is the process view. (Key point: Components)

2. What do the procedures component of an IS provide?
   A. Rules, manuals and policies describing how the system is used and controlled
   B. Computers and servers that process data
   C. Links such as LAN and WAN
   D. Raw facts to be processed
Answer: A. Procedures are the rules and policies governing system use; the others describe hardware, network and data. (Key point: Role of procedures)

3. Information that is correct but arrives after the decision was made fails which quality requirement?
   A. Accuracy
   B. Timeliness
   C. Security
   D. Scalability
Answer: B. Timeliness means information is available when needed. (Key point: Timeliness)

4. Which statement matches the security requirement?
   A. Output must be free from errors
   B. The system must be easy to learn
   C. The system must handle growing load
   D. Protect against unauthorized access and loss while keeping confidentiality and integrity
Answer: D. Security covers unauthorized access, loss, confidentiality and integrity; the others are accuracy, usability and scalability. (Key point: Security quality)
