## Question

Write a short note on Check List methodology for system design.

## Short answer

The checklist methodology uses a predefined list of design items to guide and review system design, ensuring completeness and standards. It reduces omissions and adds consistency but requires an up‑to‑date list and should not replace creative thinking.

## Answer

The **checklist methodology** is a system design technique in which designers use a prepared list of questions, items and criteria to guide, verify and review the design so that nothing important is missed.

#### How it is used
1. A checklist is prepared from past experience, standards and the organisation's requirements, grouped by topic (inputs, outputs, files, controls, security, interface, hardware, documentation).
2. During design the designer goes through each item and marks it as done, not applicable or missing.
3. At review the checklist verifies that the design is complete and meets standards.
4. Missed items are corrected before the design is approved.

#### Typical checklist questions
- Are all user requirements covered?
- Are input data validated?
- Are output reports and formats defined?
- Are access control, backup and audit trails included?
- Is the design compatible with existing hardware and software?
- Are cost and time within limits?

#### Advantages
Simple, cheap, reduces errors and omissions, gives consistency across projects, useful for review and training of new staff.
#### Limitations
Needs a good, up-to-date list; can be followed mechanically without thinking; does not give the design itself, only checks it.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is the purpose of the checklist methodology?
   A. To generate the design automatically
   B. To guide, verify and review a design so nothing important is missed
   C. To replace requirements
   D. To estimate cost only
Answer: B. A checklist guides and reviews the design for completeness. (Key point: Purpose)

2. How does a designer mark checklist items?
   A. Done, not applicable or missing
   B. Only pass or fail with no other states
   C. Not at all
   D. By deleting items
Answer: A. Items are marked done, not applicable or missing, and missed items are corrected. (Key point: How used)

3. Which is a limitation of the checklist method?
   A. It is expensive
   B. It does not give the design itself, only checks it, and needs an up-to-date list
   C. It increases errors
   D. It cannot be used for review
Answer: B. It only verifies the design and can be followed mechanically. (Key point: Limitation)
