## Question

What are different techniques and methods developed to handle voluminous data? Discuss two of such techniques. What are the key challenges in handling the voluminous data in the cloud architecture?

## Short answer

Techniques include distributed file systems, MapReduce, NoSQL databases, and stream processing. MapReduce splits data into blocks for parallel map and reduce tasks across clusters; NoSQL databases like Cassandra shard and replicate data for horizontal scalability. Cloud challenges: data transfer costs, security, vendor lock-in, and consistency vs availability trade-offs.

## Answer

#### Techniques and methods for handling voluminous (big) data
- **Distributed file systems:** GFS, HDFS.
- **Parallel processing frameworks:** MapReduce, Hadoop, Spark.
- **NoSQL databases:** HBase, Cassandra, MongoDB, for scalable storage.
- **Data warehousing and OLAP** for structured analytics.
- **Data compression and partitioning (sharding)** to cut storage and speed access.
- **In-memory computing:** Spark, Redis.
- **Stream processing:** Storm, Kafka, Flink for real-time data.
- **Cloud computing:** elastic storage and computation on demand.
- **Indexing, sampling and data reduction** (dimensionality reduction).

#### Two techniques in more detail
**1. MapReduce / Hadoop**
Data is split into blocks stored in HDFS. Map tasks process blocks in parallel to produce key-value pairs; shuffle groups them by key; reduce tasks aggregate them. It scales across thousands of machines, moves computation to data, and tolerates failures through replication and task re-execution.

**2. NoSQL databases (such as HBase / Cassandra)**
They store data as key-value, column-family, document or graph models, partitioned (sharded) across many servers and replicated. They give horizontal scalability and high availability and do not require a fixed schema, so they are suitable for fast-growing, unstructured data.

#### Key challenges of handling voluminous data in cloud architecture
1. **Data transfer and bandwidth:** moving terabytes to the cloud is slow and costly.
2. **Security and privacy:** data on third-party servers, multi-tenancy, encryption and access control.
3. **Data integrity and availability:** loss, corruption, outages.
4. **Scalability and performance:** latency, load balancing, hot spots.
5. **Consistency vs availability** in distributed storage (CAP theorem).
6. **Cost management:** storage, compute and egress charges.
7. **Vendor lock-in and interoperability.**
8. **Data quality, variety and governance,** and regulatory compliance (data location).
9. **Skilled staff** and complex tools.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why are NoSQL databases like HBase/Cassandra suited for fast-growing unstructured data?
   A. They enforce a strict fixed schema
   B. They are sharded and replicated, scale horizontally and need no fixed schema
   C. They run only on a single server
   D. They use only SQL joins
Answer: B. Sharding, replication and schema flexibility give horizontal scalability and high availability. (Key point: NoSQL advantage)

2. In MapReduce/Hadoop, which step groups intermediate pairs by key before aggregation?
   A. Map
   B. Shuffle
   C. Output writing
   D. Replication
Answer: B. Map produces key-value pairs, shuffle groups them by key, reduce aggregates. (Key point: MapReduce technique)

3. Which is a data-transfer challenge for voluminous data in the cloud?
   A. Moving terabytes to the cloud is slow and costly
   B. Data is too small to upload
   C. Clouds have no bandwidth limits
   D. Data is automatically migrated free of charge
Answer: A. Data transfer and bandwidth is the first listed challenge. (Key point: Cloud challenge: bandwidth)

4. What trade-off does the CAP theorem raise for distributed cloud storage?
   A. Cost vs speed
   B. Consistency vs availability (with partition tolerance)
   C. Security vs encryption
   D. Volume vs velocity
Answer: B. In distributed storage, consistency and availability must be traded off under network partitions. (Key point: CAP trade-off)
