## Question

NITC building had 4 research labs each having 24 computers. All labs are located at the 1st floor. Each computer is to be connected in the network from NCR located at 2nd floor. Prepare a bill of quantity (BoQ) with necessary network resources required for complete networking. The BoQ must include estimation of all network resources required.

## Short answer

For 96 PCs plus 4 APs, estimate 100 CAT6 drops at 35 m average, giving 3,850 m and 13 boxes. Use 100 faceplates, 5 patch panels, 4 access switches plus 1 PoE switch, and 1 core L3 switch. Assign each lab a /27 subnet from 192.168.10.0/24.

## Answer

#### Assumptions

- 4 labs x 24 computers = 96 computers, all on the 1st floor. The Network Control Room (NCR) is on the 2nd floor, directly above.
- One single-port CAT6 outlet per computer, plus 1 wireless AP per lab (4 drops). Total drops = 96 + 4 = 100.
- Floor height 4 m; horizontal run about 28 m; plus slack: average cable run per drop = 35 m (under the 90 m limit).
- 10% wastage on cable. Cable box = 305 m. Switches are 24-port GE with SFP uplinks. The NCR also needs a router/firewall for the internet link.

#### Layout

```text
 Internet
    |
 [Router/Firewall]            NCR (2nd floor)
    |
 [Core L3 switch]
    |
 [Patch panels x5]--[Switch x5 (4 + 1 PoE)]
    |
    | CAT6 (100 runs, 35 m average)
 ---+---------+---------+---------+---  1st floor
  Lab 1     Lab 2     Lab 3     Lab 4
  24 PC     24 PC     24 PC     24 PC
  + AP      + AP      + AP      + AP
```

#### Quantity estimation

1. Outlets (single-port faceplate with jack): 96 + 4 = **100**.
2. Cable length: 100 x 35 = 3,500 m. With 10% wastage = 3,850 m. Boxes = 3,850 / 305 = 12.6, so **13 boxes**.
3. Patch panel ports = 100. 100 / 24 = 4.2, so **5 patch panels** (24-port).
4. Switches: 96 PC ports / 24 = 4 switches fully used, plus 1 PoE switch for the 4 APs and spare ports = **5 access switches**. One core L3 switch connects them to the router = **1**.
5. Patch cords: user side 2 m = 100; panel to switch 1 m = 100; switch to core 1 m = 5. Total **205**.
6. Rack space: 5 panels (5U) + 5 switches (5U) + core (1U) + router/firewall (1U) + cable managers (4U) + UPS (2U) = 18U, so one 24U or 42U rack.

#### Bill of Quantity

| S.N. | Item | Specification | Qty |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | CAT6 UTP cable | 305 m box | 13 boxes |
| 2 | Faceplate + jack | Single-port, CAT6 | 100 |
| 3 | Patch panel | 24-port CAT6 | 5 |
| 4 | Patch cord 2 m | CAT6 | 100 |
| 5 | Patch cord 1 m | CAT6 | 105 |
| 6 | Access switch | 24-port GE + 2 SFP | 4 |
| 7 | PoE switch | 24-port PoE+ | 1 |
| 8 | Core L3 switch | 24-port, SFP+ | 1 |
| 9 | Wireless AP | Dual-band, PoE | 4 |
| 10 | Router / firewall | NAT, DHCP | 1 |
| 11 | Rack | 42U with cable managers | 1 |
| 12 | UPS | 2 kVA | 1 |
| 13 | PVC conduit / trunking | 25 mm | 150 m |
| 14 | Cable ties, labels | | lot |
| 15 | Cable tester | | 1 |

#### IP plan (192.168.10.0/24)

| Network | Subnet | Usable | Gateway |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lab 1 | 192.168.10.0/27 | 30 | .1 |
| Lab 2 | 192.168.10.32/27 | 30 | .33 |
| Lab 3 | 192.168.10.64/27 | 30 | .65 |
| Lab 4 | 192.168.10.96/27 | 30 | .97 |
| Wi-Fi / APs | 192.168.10.128/27 | 30 | .129 |
| Servers / management | 192.168.10.160/27 | 30 | .161 |

Each /27 has 30 usable hosts, enough for 24 PCs and a gateway with spare addresses. The core L3 switch routes between the subnets, and the router provides DHCP (through DHCP relay on the core) and NAT to the internet.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. How many network outlets (drops) does the NITC BoQ calculate?
   A. 96
   B. 100
   C. 104
   D. 120
   Answer: B. 4 labs x 24 PCs = 96 computers, plus 1 AP per lab (4), giving 100 drops. (Key point: Counting drops)

2. How is the number of CAT6 boxes found?
   A. 100 x 35 m = 3,500 m, add 10% wastage to get 3,850 m, divide by 305 m and round up to 13
   B. 3,500 m divided by 305 m rounded down to 11
   C. 96 x 35 m divided by 100 m per box
   D. 100 x 90 m divided by 305 m
   Answer: A. Wastage is added before dividing by the 305 m box length, and the result 12.6 is rounded up to 13 boxes. (Key point: Cable estimation)

3. Why are 5 patch panels needed?
   A. One per lab plus a spare
   B. 100 ports divided by 24 per panel is 4.2, rounded up to 5
   C. Each switch needs two panels
   D. Each AP needs its own panel
   Answer: B. There are 100 terminated cables and each panel has 24 ports, so 4.2 panels means 5. (Key point: Patch panel count)

4. How are the 205 patch cords made up?
   A. 100 user-side 2 m, 100 panel-to-switch 1 m, and 5 switch-to-core 1 m
   B. 96 + 96 + 13
   C. 200 user-side only
   D. 100 panel-to-switch and 105 switch-to-router
   Answer: A. Each drop needs a 2 m user cord and a 1 m panel-to-switch cord, and each of the 5 access switches needs a 1 m uplink to the core. (Key point: Patch cord total)

5. Why is an extra PoE switch included beyond the four 24-port access switches?
   A. To provide a second core
   B. To power the 4 wireless APs over the cable and give spare uplink ports
   C. To connect the router to the internet
   D. To extend cables beyond 90 m
   Answer: B. Four switches fully serve the 96 PCs; one PoE switch powers the 4 APs. (Key point: Why a separate PoE switch)
