## Question

What are the major components/organizations of internet ecosystem? Write down the roles and responsibilities of Internet Registries under IANA.

## Short answer

Key components include ISOC, IAB, IETF, IRTF, ICANN/IANA, RIRs, ISPs/IXPs, W3C/IEEE/ITU, and content providers/users. The Registries under IANA are five RIRs that allocate IP addresses and ASNs, maintain WHOIS for accountability, develop allocation policies, conserve address space, and provide reverse DNS delegation and training.

## Answer

#### Major components/organisations of the Internet ecosystem

The Internet has no owner. It works through cooperating organisations, each with a role.

| Organisation | Role |
|---|---|
| ISOC | Non-profit that promotes the open development of the Internet and supports IETF and IAB |
| IAB | Technical advice and architecture oversight |
| IETF / IESG | Develop and approve Internet standards as RFCs |
| IRTF | Long-term Internet research |
| ICANN | Coordinates DNS, IP addresses and protocol parameters; accredits registrars |
| IANA | Central registry of number resources, root zone and protocol parameters |
| RIRs | Allocate IP addresses and ASNs in their regions |
| ISPs / IXPs | Provide access and interconnection |
| W3C, IEEE, ITU | Web, LAN and telecom standards |
| Content providers, enterprises, users | Create and consume traffic and services |

#### Roles and responsibilities of Internet Registries under IANA

The Internet registries under IANA are the five **Regional Internet Registries (RIRs)**: AFRINIC (Africa), APNIC (Asia-Pacific, including Nepal), ARIN (North America), LACNIC (Latin America and Caribbean) and RIPE NCC (Europe, Middle East, Central Asia). Beneath them are National Internet Registries (NIRs) and Local Internet Registries (LIRs, i.e. ISPs).

Roles and responsibilities:

1. **Allocation and assignment:** receive blocks of IPv4, IPv6 and AS numbers from IANA and distribute them to NIRs, LIRs and end organisations according to documented need.
2. **Registration and database:** record each allocation in a public **WHOIS** database, which gives accountability and a contact for abuse and operational problems.
3. **Policy development:** run an open, bottom-up policy development process in which the community (ISPs, users) proposes and approves address policies.
4. **Conservation and aggregation:** apply need-based rules to conserve scarce IPv4 space and encourage hierarchical allocation to keep routing tables small.
5. **Reverse DNS delegation:** delegate in-addr.arpa and ip6.arpa zones so that IP addresses can be mapped back to names.
6. **Coordination:** work with each other and IANA through the Number Resource Organization (NRO) on global policy and statistics.
7. **Training and outreach:** provide training, meetings and technical support to members, and promote IPv6 and RPKI-based routing security.
8. **Membership services:** manage members, fees and reports for the region.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which are the Regional Internet Registries under IANA?
   A. IETF, IAB, IRTF, ISOC, W3C
   B. AFRINIC, APNIC, ARIN, LACNIC, RIPE NCC
   C. ICANN, PTI, NRO, ITU, IEEE
   D. JPNIC, CNNIC, KRNIC, TWNIC, IRINN
Answer: B. The five RIRs are AFRINIC, APNIC, ARIN, LACNIC and RIPE NCC. The last option lists NIRs. (Key point: RIRs under IANA)

2. Why do RIRs record every allocation in a public WHOIS database?
   A. To charge ISPs per query
   B. To translate names to IP addresses
   C. To set the IETF standards track
   D. To give accountability and a contact for abuse and operational problems
Answer: D. WHOIS shows who holds each block, which helps trace abuse and solve routing problems. (Key point: WHOIS database)

3. How do RIRs develop address policy?
   A. IANA decides alone and RIRs follow
   B. Through an open, bottom-up community process where ISPs and users propose and approve policies
   C. Governments vote through the ITU
   D. Policies are fixed by the IETF RFC Editor
Answer: B. RIR policy comes from the open, bottom-up community process. (Key point: Policy development)

4. What does an RIR's reverse DNS delegation provide?
   A. Delegates in-addr.arpa and ip6.arpa zones so IP addresses can be mapped back to names
   B. Delegation of .com to registrars
   C. Mapping port numbers to protocols
   D. Assignment of MIME types
Answer: A. RIRs delegate the in-addr.arpa and ip6.arpa zones used for reverse lookups. (Key point: Reverse DNS delegation)
