## Question

What is intranet implementation? Explain the procedure to follow for intranet implementation. Write the concept of Virtual Private Network (VPN).

## Short answer

Intranet implementation is the process of planning, building, and deploying a private network using internet technologies. The procedure involves defining goals, forming a team, assessing infrastructure, designing the network, selecting servers and software, developing content, planning security, installing and testing, training users, and maintaining. A VPN creates a secure, encrypted tunnel over a public network for remote access.

## Answer

#### Intranet implementation

An **intranet** is a private network of an organisation that uses internet technologies (TCP/IP, HTTP, web browsers, e-mail) for internal information sharing and applications, and is closed to outsiders. **Intranet implementation** means planning, building and putting such a network into use: LAN, servers, web services, applications, security and user training.

#### Procedure for implementation

1. **Define goals and requirements.** Decide why the intranet is needed (document sharing, e-mail, HR portal, workflow) and identify users and departments.
2. **Form a team and plan.** Select a project team, set budget, schedule and responsibilities.
3. **Study the existing infrastructure.** Check buildings, cabling, PCs, OS and bandwidth.
4. **Design the network.** Choose topology, structured cabling, switches, IP address plan, VLANs, and server placement. Plan connection to the internet through a firewall.
5. **Choose servers and software.** Web server (Apache/IIS), mail, file, database, DNS, DHCP, proxy and a CMS or portal.
6. **Design the content and applications.** Build the home page, department pages, forms and databases. Define who can publish and edit.
7. **Plan security.** Authentication, access control, firewall, antivirus, backup, and policies.
8. **Install and configure.** Cable, install hardware, configure services, install applications.
9. **Test.** Check connectivity, performance, security and user functions in a pilot group.
10. **Train users and launch.** Train staff, then roll out to all departments.
11. **Maintain and improve.** Monitor, update content, back up, support users and plan upgrades.

#### Virtual Private Network (VPN)

A **VPN** is a secure, private connection built over a public network such as the internet. It lets remote users or branch offices reach the intranet as if they were on the local LAN, at a lower cost than a leased line.

**How it works.** Data is placed inside an encrypted packet (tunnelling) and sent across the internet; the VPN gateway at the other end decrypts it.

```text
 Branch / Remote user                 Head office
 [PC]-[VPN client]== Internet ==[VPN gateway]-[LAN]
         encrypted tunnel (IPsec / SSL)
```

**Key concepts**

- **Tunnelling** with protocols such as IPsec, L2TP, PPTP or SSL/TLS.
- **Encryption** gives confidentiality, **authentication** checks identity, and **integrity** checks that data is not changed.
- **Types:** remote-access VPN (single user to office) and site-to-site VPN (office to office).
- **Benefits:** low cost, security, flexibility, easy expansion.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is an intranet?
   A. A public network open to anyone
   B. A private organisational network using internet technologies like TCP/IP and HTTP, closed to outsiders
   C. A type of leased line
   D. A web browser plug-in
   Answer: B. An intranet uses internet technologies for internal sharing and is restricted to the organisation. (Key point: Intranet definition)

2. Which order of steps is correct in the implementation procedure?
   A. Install, then define goals, then test
   B. Define goals and requirements, study existing infrastructure, design, install, test with a pilot, then train and launch
   C. Train users first, then design
   D. Launch to all departments, then test
   Answer: B. Planning and design come before installation, a pilot test comes before the full rollout, and maintenance follows. (Key point: Order of procedure)

3. How does a VPN protect data crossing the internet?
   A. It sends data in plain text over a faster path
   B. It encrypts data inside packets (tunnelling) which the VPN gateway at the far end decrypts
   C. It physically leases a private wire
   D. It blocks all incoming traffic
   Answer: B. Tunnelling with encryption (IPsec or SSL) makes the public network behave like a private link. (Key point: VPN tunnelling)

4. Which pair are the two main VPN types?
   A. Remote-access and site-to-site
   B. Wired and wireless
   C. Static and dynamic
   D. Client and proxy
   Answer: A. Remote-access connects a single user to the office, while site-to-site links two offices. (Key point: VPN types)
