## Question

Explain the applications of multimedia in media entertainment such as interactive TV, video on demand, and interactive video and audio.

## Short answer

Interactive TV uses a return channel for voting, EPG and shopping. Video on demand gives VCR-like playback from a video server over a network. Interactive video and audio let users control content through branching stories, playlists and games.

## Answer

Multimedia combines text, audio, images, video and interactivity, which makes it central to modern entertainment media.

#### Interactive TV (ITV)
Interactive television lets viewers act on what they watch instead of only receiving a one-way broadcast. A return channel (cable, internet or mobile) carries the viewer's choices.
- Voting and polls in shows, quizzes, and choosing camera angles in sport.
- On-screen programme guides (EPG), shopping and ordering from adverts, and extra information about a programme.
- Examples: smart TV apps, set-top boxes with a remote, IPTV.

#### Video on demand (VoD)
VoD lets users choose a video and watch it at any time, with VCR-like functions (play, pause, rewind, fast forward).
- Needs a video server that stores compressed (MPEG) video, a high-bandwidth network and a set-top box or app at the user's end.
- Types: true VoD (any time, immediate), near VoD (starts at fixed intervals), pay-per-view.
- Examples: Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, and IPTV and streaming apps offered by Nepali providers.
- Issues: server capacity, bandwidth, quality of service, digital rights management and billing.

#### Interactive video and audio
The user controls the content flow rather than simply watching or listening.
- Interactive video: branching storylines, clickable hotspots, training videos with quizzes, 360-degree videos.
- Interactive audio: music players with playlists, interactive music mixing, audio books with chapters, voice response systems, games with dynamic sound.
- Used in e-learning, advertisements, museums and games.

 Video server --> Network --> Set-top box/app --> TV
        ^                          |
        +------ user request ------+
```
**Benefits:** personalised, on-demand and engaging entertainment. **Requirements:** compression, high bandwidth and low delay.
The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.
1. What makes television 'interactive' rather than a one-way broadcast?
   A. A larger screen
   B. A return channel (cable, internet or mobile) carries the viewer's choices
   C. Higher video resolution
   D. Use of MPEG compression
   Answer: B. ITV lets viewers act on what they watch, using a return channel to carry their choices. (Key point: Interactive TV return channel)
2. Which VoD type starts the video at fixed intervals instead of immediately?
   A. True VoD
   B. Pay-per-view
   C. Interactive VoD
   D. Near VoD
   Answer: D. Near VoD starts at fixed intervals; true VoD is any time and immediate. (Key point: Types of VoD)
3. What does a VoD system need?
   A. A video server storing compressed video, a high-bandwidth network and a set-top box or app
   B. Only a broadcast antenna
   C. An uncompressed video store and a low-bandwidth link
   D. Only a return channel without a server
   Answer: A. VoD uses a server with compressed (MPEG) video, high bandwidth and a user-end set-top box or app. (Key point: VoD requirements)
4. Which is an example of interactive video?
   A. A live news broadcast with no controls
   B. A single fixed-order audio track
   C. Branching storylines and clickable hotspots
   D. A recorded lecture played once
   Answer: C. In interactive video the user controls the flow, e.g. branching storylines, hotspots, quizzes and 360-degree video. (Key point: Interactive video and audio)
