## Question

Explain the applications of multimedia in Video Conference system with example.

## Short answer

A video conference uses cameras, microphones, codecs, networks and an MCU to link sites in real time. Applications include business meetings, distance education, telemedicine, interviews and family calls. Requirements are low delay, lip synchronisation, adequate bandwidth and echo cancellation.

## Answer

A video conference system links people at two or more places, letting them see and hear each other in real time using audio, video and data channels.

#### Components
```text
 Site A                           Site B
 Camera+Mic -> Codec -> Network -> Codec -> Display+Speaker
 Display+Spk <- Codec <- Network <- Codec <- Camera+Mic
```
- Camera, microphone, display and speakers at each site.
- **Codec** to compress/decompress audio and video (H.261/H.263/H.264 video, G.711/G.728 audio).
- Network: ISDN, IP network or internet.
- **MCU (multipoint control unit)** to link three or more sites.
- Software for control, chat and data sharing.

#### Applications
1. **Business meetings:** remote teams meet without travel, saving cost and time.
2. **Distance education:** a teacher at one campus teaches students at several centres.
3. **Telemedicine:** specialist consultation with a remote patient.
4. **Government and courts:** remote hearings and meetings between district offices and the capital.
5. **Customer support, job interviews and recruitment** from different cities or countries.
6. **Personal communication:** family calls across countries, important for Nepali families with members abroad.
7. **Collaborative work:** shared whiteboard, screen sharing, joint documents, file transfer.
8. **Press conferences and seminars (webinars).**

**Example:** a company with offices in Kathmandu and Pokhara holds its weekly meeting using Zoom. Participants share a presentation and talk, and the meeting is recorded.

**Requirements:** low delay (under about 150 ms), lip synchronisation of audio and video, adequate bandwidth, and echo cancellation. Audio quality matters more than video quality for understanding.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is the function of the codec in a video conference system?
   A. Link three or more sites together
   B. Compress and decompress audio and video
   C. Display the picture
   D. Cancel echo only
   Answer: B. The codec compresses audio/video for transmission and decompresses it at the receiver (e.g. H.264, G.711). (Key point: Role of codec)

2. When is a multipoint control unit (MCU) needed?
   A. For a call between two sites only
   B. To compress video
   C. To link three or more sites
   D. To provide the microphone
   Answer: C. An MCU links three or more sites in a conference. (Key point: MCU)

3. What is the approximate delay requirement for a video conference?
   A. Under about 5 seconds
   B. Under about 150 ms
   C. Under about 1 minute
   D. Delay does not matter
   Answer: B. Low delay, under about 150 ms, is needed for natural conversation. (Key point: Delay requirement)

4. Which statement about audio and video quality is correct?
   A. Audio quality matters more than video quality for understanding
   B. Video quality matters more than audio
   C. Both are unimportant
   D. Only lip sync matters, not audio
   Answer: A. Audio quality is more important for understanding; lip synchronisation and echo cancellation are also required. (Key point: Audio vs video quality)
