## Question

Discuss the steps of the user interface design process for multimedia with block diagram/example.

## Short answer

The multimedia UI design process is iterative: requirement analysis, user and task analysis, structure and layout design, prototyping, implementation, and evaluation with real users. Feedback loops refine the design. Example: an e-learning CD tested with children led to redesigning the back button.

## Answer

The user interface design process for multimedia is an iterative, user-centred sequence of steps that moves from understanding users to testing the finished interface.

```text
 Requirement analysis
        |
 User & task analysis
        |
 Design (structure, layout, media)
        |
 Prototype
        |
 Implementation
        |
 Evaluation/testing --> (feedback loop back to design)
```

#### Steps

1. **Requirement analysis.** Find out what the system must do, the goals, content, platform and budget. Method: interviews, questionnaires, studying similar systems.
2. **User and task analysis.** Identify the target users (age, skill, language, disabilities) and the tasks they perform, in the order they perform them. This decides what the interface must support.
3. **Design the structure.** Decide the navigation structure (linear, hierarchical, network) and the flow between screens, using storyboards or flowcharts.
4. **Design the layout and media.** Plan each screen: position of text, graphics, audio, video and controls; choose colours, fonts and icons; follow design guidelines (consistency, feedback, simplicity).
5. **Prototype.** Build a quick low-fidelity version (paper sketches, wireframes) and then a working high-fidelity one so users can try it early.
6. **Implementation.** Develop the final interface using authoring tools or programming (for example Flash, Director, HTML5).
7. **Evaluation and testing.** Test with real users: usability tests, observation, questionnaires. Check ease of use, errors, speed and satisfaction.
8. **Iteration and maintenance.** Feed the results back, fix problems and refine. Repeat until goals are met; update after release.

**Example:** for a school e-learning CD, analysis finds the users are 10-year-olds with limited reading ability. The design therefore uses large icons, narration and a simple linear lesson flow. A paper prototype is tested with some children, their confusion about the back button is noted, and the button is redesigned before final release.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which is the correct order of the early steps in the multimedia UI design process?
   A. Prototype, requirement analysis, user and task analysis
   B. Requirement analysis, user and task analysis, design
   C. User and task analysis, implementation, design
   D. Design, requirement analysis, evaluation
   Answer: B. The process goes from requirement analysis to user and task analysis, then design, prototype, implementation and evaluation. (Key point: Order of the process)

2. What is the purpose of user and task analysis?
   A. To identify target users and the tasks they perform, deciding what the interface must support
   B. To write the final program code
   C. To test the finished interface with questionnaires
   D. To choose the budget of the project
   Answer: A. It identifies users (age, skill, language, disabilities) and their tasks, which decides what the interface must support. (Key point: User and task analysis)

3. How is prototyping done in this process?
   A. Only a final high-fidelity version is built after release
   B. A quick low-fidelity version (sketches, wireframes) first, then a working high-fidelity one
   C. Prototypes are skipped if the design follows guidelines
   D. Only a flow chart is drawn, with no user trials
   Answer: B. Low-fidelity prototypes such as paper sketches come first, then a working high-fidelity one so users can try it early. (Key point: Prototyping)

4. Why does the process have a feedback loop from evaluation back to design?
   A. Because implementation must always be repeated from scratch
   B. Because requirements are never analysed
   C. Because test results are used to fix problems and refine the interface until goals are met
   D. Because the budget must be recalculated each time
   Answer: C. The process is iterative: findings from user testing are fed back, problems fixed, and the cycle repeated until goals are met. (Key point: Evaluation feedback loop)
