Paints, types and applications in engineering
Short answer
Paint is a pigment dispersion in a drying oil. Oil paint (pigment in linseed oil) is used on wood, walls and metalwork. Enamel paint (pigment in varnish) gives a hard glossy finish for machines, vehicles and bathrooms.
What are paints? Give an account of any two types of paints indicating their applications in engineering works.
Paint is a dispersion of pigment in a drying oil with thinner, drier and other additives, used to protect and decorate surfaces.
Types of paint and applications
- Oil paint: pigment in linseed oil with thinner and drier. Used on wood, walls, metal doors and windows, and exterior woodwork.
- Enamel paint: pigment dispersed in varnish (resin + oil). Forms a hard, glossy, water-resistant film; used on machines, vehicles, metal furniture, bathrooms and kitchens.
- Emulsion (water) paint: pigment in a water-based emulsion of a polymer (acrylic, PVA). Quick-drying and washable; used on interior walls and ceilings of buildings.
- Anticorrosive paint: contains red lead, zinc chromate or zinc dust; protects steel bridges, tanks, pipes and ships from rusting.
- Cement paint: cement + pigment; used on rough exterior walls.
- Bituminous paint: bitumen in a solvent; used on underground pipes and wet surfaces.
