Threshold midway: λ = A T b 4 \lambda=\frac{AT_b}{4} λ = 4 A T b . Using the binary result P e = 1 2 erfc ( a 1 − a 2 2 2 σ ) P_e=\frac12\operatorname{erfc}\left(\frac{a_1-a_2}{2\sqrt2\sigma}\right) P e = 2 1 erfc ( 2 2 σ a 1 − a 2 ) :
a 1 − a 2 2 2 σ = A T b / 2 2 2 N 0 T b / 4 = A T b 2 2 N 0 = A 2 T b 8 N 0 \begin{aligned}
\frac{a_1-a_2}{2\sqrt2\,\sigma} &= \frac{AT_b/2}{2\sqrt2\sqrt{N_0T_b/4}}=\frac{A\sqrt{T_b}}{2\sqrt{2N_0}}=\sqrt{\frac{A^2T_b}{8N_0}}
\end{aligned} 2 2 σ a 1 − a 2 = 2 2 N 0 T b /4 A T b /2 = 2 2 N 0 A T b = 8 N 0 A 2 T b
Energy of a "1" pulse is E 1 = A 2 T b 2 E_1=\frac{A^2T_b}{2} E 1 = 2 A 2 T b ; the average energy per bit (half the bits are 0) is E b = E 1 2 = A 2 T b 4 E_b=\frac{E_1}{2}=\frac{A^2T_b}{4} E b = 2 E 1 = 4 A 2 T b . Hence A 2 T b 8 N 0 = E b 2 N 0 \frac{A^2T_b}{8N_0}=\frac{E_b}{2N_0} 8 N 0 A 2 T b = 2 N 0 E b and

(In terms of peak energy E 1 E_1 E 1 : P e = 1 2 erfc E 1 / 4 N 0 P_e=\frac12\operatorname{erfc}\sqrt{E_1/4N_0} P e = 2 1 erfc E 1 /4 N 0 .)
Extension to M-ary ASK
In M-ary ASK the carrier takes M M M amplitudes A i = i A A_i=iA A i = i A , i = 0 , 1 , … , M − 1 i=0,1,\dots,M-1 i = 0 , 1 , … , M − 1 , each symbol of duration T s T_s T s carrying log 2 M \log_2M log 2 M bits. The same coherent correlator gives
y = a i + n , a i = i A T s 2 , σ 2 = N 0 T s 4 y=a_i+n,\qquad a_i=\frac{iAT_s}{2},\qquad \sigma^2=\frac{N_0T_s}{4} y = a i + n , a i = 2 i A T s , σ 2 = 4 N 0 T s
Levels are spaced Δ = A T s 2 \Delta=\frac{AT_s}{2} Δ = 2 A T s apart, and thresholds are placed midway. The two end levels can be mistaken on one side only; the M − 2 M-2 M − 2 inner levels on both sides:
P e = 1 M [ ( M − 2 ) ⋅ 2 Q ( Δ 2 σ ) + 2 ⋅ Q ( Δ 2 σ ) ] = 2 ( 1 − 1 M ) Q ( Δ 2 σ ) Δ 2 σ = A T s / 2 2 N 0 T s / 4 = A 2 T s 4 N 0 \begin{aligned}
P_e &= \frac1M\left[(M-2)\cdot2Q\left(\frac{\Delta}{2\sigma}\right)+2\cdot Q\left(\frac{\Delta}{2\sigma}\right)\right]=2\left(1-\frac1M\right)Q\left(\frac{\Delta}{2\sigma}\right) \\
\frac{\Delta}{2\sigma} &= \frac{AT_s/2}{2\sqrt{N_0T_s/4}}=\sqrt{\frac{A^2T_s}{4N_0}}
\end{aligned} P e 2 σ Δ = M 1 [ ( M − 2 ) ⋅ 2 Q ( 2 σ Δ ) + 2 ⋅ Q ( 2 σ Δ ) ] = 2 ( 1 − M 1 ) Q ( 2 σ Δ ) = 2 N 0 T s /4 A T s /2 = 4 N 0 A 2 T s
Average symbol energy: E i = i 2 A 2 T s 2 E_i=\frac{i^2A^2T_s}{2} E i = 2 i 2 A 2 T s , so
E s = A 2 T s 2 M ∑ i = 0 M − 1 i 2 = A 2 T s ( M − 1 ) ( 2 M − 1 ) 12 E_s=\frac{A^2T_s}{2M}\sum_{i=0}^{M-1}i^2=\frac{A^2T_s(M-1)(2M-1)}{12} E s = 2 M A 2 T s i = 0 ∑ M − 1 i 2 = 12 A 2 T s ( M − 1 ) ( 2 M − 1 )
Substituting A 2 T s = 12 E s ( M − 1 ) ( 2 M − 1 ) A^2T_s=\frac{12E_s}{(M-1)(2M-1)} A 2 T s = ( M − 1 ) ( 2 M − 1 ) 12 E s :
P e ( M-ASK ) = 2 ( 1 − 1 M ) Q ( 3 E s ( M − 1 ) ( 2 M − 1 ) N 0 ) P_e(\text{M-ASK})=2\left(1-\frac1M\right)Q\left(\sqrt{\frac{3E_s}{(M-1)(2M-1)N_0}}\right) P e ( M-ASK ) = 2 ( 1 − M 1 ) Q ( ( M − 1 ) ( 2 M − 1 ) N 0 3 E s )
Check M = 2 M=2 M = 2 : P e = Q ( E s / N 0 ) P_e=Q\left(\sqrt{E_s/N_0}\right) P e = Q ( E s / N 0 ) with E s = E b E_s=E_b E s = E b , the binary ASK result. For larger M M M the levels crowd together for the same average energy, so P e P_e P e grows, while the bandwidth per bit falls by log 2 M \log_2M log 2 M .
