Open dumping and sanitary landfill
Short answer
Open dumping is uncontrolled waste disposal without cover or environmental controls, causing odour, vermin, water pollution, and health hazards. Sanitary landfill is an engineered site with daily cover, compaction, liners, leachate collection, and gas vents, minimizing pollution and nuisances. A general landfill may have partial controls but lacks full sanitary features.
Discuss in brief about open dumping and sanitary landfill (Sanitary Landfill, Landfill and Open dumping).
Open dumping
Open dumping is the uncontrolled disposal of solid waste on open land, river banks or roadsides without covering, compaction or any environmental control. It is the cheapest method but causes:
- bad odour, flies, rodents and the spread of disease;
- burning of waste (air pollution) and fires;
- leachate that pollutes surface and ground water;
- loss of aesthetics and land value, and scavenging by animals and people.
Sanitary landfill
A sanitary landfill is an engineered disposal site where waste is spread in thin layers, compacted and covered with soil daily. It has a liner (clay or HDPE), leachate collection, gas vents, drainage and monitoring wells. The final cover is soil with vegetation. When managed well, it has no odour or vermin problems and causes little pollution.
Landfill (general)
A landfill is any land disposal site where waste is buried. A controlled landfill has some of the controls of a sanitary landfill (daily or periodic cover, fencing, supervision) but not always a full liner or gas collection.
| Open dumping | Sanitary landfill |
|---|---|
| Uncontrolled, no design | Engineered and planned |
| No daily cover or compaction | Compaction and daily soil cover |
| Leachate pollutes water | Liner and leachate treatment |
| Odour, flies, rodents | Nuisances controlled |
| Very low cost | Higher cost |
| Not environmentally acceptable | Accepted method of final disposal |
