Low-pass FIR window design, αs = 41 dB

Short answer

Use Hanning window (44 dB). Transition width 0.3π gives M=27, ωc=0.35π. First six impulse response coefficients: h(0)=0, h(1)=0.0002, h(2)=−0.0008, h(3)=−0.0040, h(4)=−0.0035, h(5)=0.0075.

Find out the first six coefficients of impulse response of a low pass FIR filter having pass band edge frequency ωp = 0.2π, stop band edge frequency ωs = 0.5π and stop band attenuation αs = 41 dB using any appropriate window function.

Window and length

αs = 41 dB, so Bartlett (25 dB) is not enough; the Hanning window (44 dB, main lobe 8π/M) is the first that works.

Δω = ωs − ωp = 0.5π − 0.2π = 0.3π

M ≥ 8π/Δω = 8π/0.3π = 26.7, so take M = 27 (odd), α = (M−1)/2 = 13.

ωc = (0.2π + 0.5π)/2 = 0.35π

Formulas

h_d(n) = sin(0.35π(n − 13)) / (π(n − 13)), n ≠ 13; h_d(13) = 0.35

w(n) = 0.5 [1 − cos(2πn/26)]

h(n) = h_d(n) · w(n)

Sample calculation (n = 3): h_d(3) = sin(0.35π × 10)/(10π) = sin(3.5π)/(10π) = −1/(10π) = −0.03183; w(3) = 0.5[1 − cos(2π×3/26)] = 0.12574; h(3) = −0.0040.

Answer: h(0) = 0, h(1) = 0.0002, h(2) = −0.0008, h(3) = −0.0040, h(4) = −0.0035, h(5) = 0.0075 (the rest follow from h(n) = h(26 − n); h(13) = 0.35). A numerical check of the full filter gives a stop-band peak of −43.9 dB, so the 41 dB requirement is met.
