Short note: data mining and warehousing

Short answer

A data warehouse integrates historical data from multiple sources via ETL for analysis. Data mining discovers patterns like classification and clustering from large datasets; it relies on the warehouse for clean, integrated data.

Write a short note on Data mining and data ware housing.

Data warehousing

A data warehouse is a centralised repository of integrated, subject-oriented, time-variant, non-volatile data from multiple operational systems, designed for query, reporting and analysis rather than transaction processing. Data is Extracted, Transformed and Loaded (ETL) into the warehouse, and often organised in star or snowflake schemas. Data marts are smaller departmental subsets. OLAP tools provide roll-up, drill-down, slice and dice.

Data mining

Data mining is the process of discovering previously unknown, useful patterns and relationships in large databases using statistics, machine learning and database techniques. It is a step of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD).

Main techniques:

  • Classification - assign records to known classes (loan risk).
  • Clustering - group similar records (customer segments).
  • Association rules - items bought together (market basket).
  • Regression/prediction - forecast values.
  • Anomaly detection - fraud.

Relationship: the warehouse provides clean, integrated data; mining extracts knowledge from it. Applications: retail, banking, telecom, healthcare and fraud detection.
