Animation techniques and software tools

Short answer

Techniques include cel animation, key-frame tweening, path animation, morphing, stop-motion, 2D sprite, 3D skeletal, and procedural/particle animation. Tools include Adobe Animate, Toon Boom, Blender, Maya, After Effects, Dragonframe, and Unity.

Explain the various techniques associated with animation and also explain the various software tools available for animation nowadays.

Animation is the technique of creating the illusion of motion by displaying a series of still images (frames) quickly, usually 12 to 30 frames per second, using persistence of vision.

Animation techniques

  1. Cel (traditional) animation: each frame is hand-drawn on transparent celluloid sheets. Senior artists draw key frames; assistants draw the in-between frames. Layers (background and moving characters) are stacked and photographed.
  2. Key-frame animation (tweening): the animator defines only important frames (start and end positions). The computer interpolates the in-between frames. Used in almost all digital tools.
  3. Path animation: an object is moved along a defined path (line or curve) over time.
  4. Morphing: one image smoothly changes into another by warping shapes and blending colours, for example a face changing into another face.
  5. Stop-motion (clay or puppet) animation: real objects are moved slightly between photographs.
  6. 2D computer animation (sprite based): images (sprites) are moved, scaled and rotated on screen, common in games and web banners.
  7. 3D computer animation: objects are modelled, given materials and lighting, then animated and rendered. Includes skeletal (bone) animation, physics simulation and motion capture.
  8. Procedural and particle animation: motion is produced by rules or algorithms, such as smoke, rain or fire.

Software tools

TypeTools
2D animationAdobe Animate (Flash), Toon Boom Harmony, Synfig Studio, OpenToonz, Pencil2D
3D modelling and animationAutodesk Maya, 3ds Max, Blender (free), Cinema 4D
Motion graphics and effectsAdobe After Effects
Stop motionDragonframe, Stop Motion Studio

Web animationCSS animation, JavaScript libraries, Lottie

Blender is popular with students because it is free and covers modelling, animation and rendering.
