Rectification and half wave rectifier
Short answer
Rectification converts AC to unidirectional pulsating DC. A half-wave rectifier uses one series diode: it conducts on the positive half cycle (output follows input minus diode drop) and blocks on the negative half cycle (output zero). Key values: Vdc = Vm/π, ripple factor 1.21, efficiency 40.6%, PIV = Vm.
Describe the rectification process. Explain the operation of half wave rectifier with necessary diagrams.
Rectification
Rectification is the process of converting an alternating current (ac) into a unidirectional pulsating direct current (dc), using a device that conducts in only one direction, usually a diode. Rectifiers are of two types: half wave and full wave.

A transformer (or the mains) gives the secondary voltage vs = Vm sin ωt. A single diode D is in series with the load RL.
Operation
- Positive half cycle (0 to π): the diode is forward biased and conducts. Current flows through RL, so vo = vs (minus 0.7 V for a real Si diode).
- Negative half cycle (π to 2π): the diode is reverse biased and acts as an open circuit. The current is zero, so vo = 0 and the whole of vs appears across the diode.

Expressions (ideal diode, Im = Vm/RL)
- Idc = Im/π = 0.318 Im; Vdc = Vm/π
- Irms = Im/2; Vrms = Vm/2
- Form factor = Vrms/Vdc = π/2 = 1.57
- Ripple factor r = 1.21
- Efficiency η = 40.6% (maximum)
- PIV of the diode = Vm
- Ripple frequency = input frequency f
Advantages: simple and cheap. Disadvantages: low efficiency, high ripple, dc saturation of the transformer core, and only one half cycle is used.
