Hydrated versus hydraulic lime
Short answer
Hydrated lime is dry Ca(OH)₂ powder from quicklime plus limited water, non-hydraulic and sets only in air. Hydraulic lime is from clayey limestone, contains calcium silicates/aluminates, sets underwater and has higher strength.
Differentiate between hydrated and hydraulic lime.
| Basis | Hydrated lime | Hydraulic lime |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Quicklime treated with a limited amount of water (Ca(OH)₂ dry powder) | Lime made from limestone containing clay |
| Source | Any quicklime, usually fat lime | Clayey limestone (5-30% clay) |
| Composition | Calcium hydroxide | Calcium silicates, aluminates and CaO |
| Hydraulicity | Non-hydraulic, sets in air only | Sets under water |
| Form | Fine dry powder, easy to store and transport | Lumps or powder |
| Strength | Low | Higher |
| Use | Plaster, whitewash and as an additive | Masonry in damp places |
