Proposal for drinking water scheme

Short answer

The abstract proposes a 6 km gravity-fed pipeline from Nagarkot to a 60,000-litre reservoir and 30 taps, serving 450 households in 8 months at Rs. 1.2 crore. The introduction notes one-hour daily supply, dry contaminated wells, and water-borne diseases. Methodology: survey, spring intake, HDPE pipes, RCC reservoir with chlorination, distribution, user committee, quality tests, and training local technicians.

Write a proposal on the establishment of "Drinking water scheme of your local VDC/town" including only Abstract, Introduction and Methodology.

Abstract

Ward 5 of Bhaktapur's Changunarayan area has about 450 households that depend on a few old stone taps and wells. The water is not enough and often unsafe. This proposal presents a drinking water scheme to bring water from a protected source at Nagarkot, 6 km away, through a gravity-fed pipeline into a 60,000-litre reservoir tank, and from there to 30 public taps and households. The project will take eight months and cost about Rs. 1.2 crore, with 70 percent to be given by the municipality and the remainder by the users and donors. A water users' committee will operate and maintain the system. The scheme will supply 45 litres per person per day of clean water.

Introduction

Water is a basic human need, but people of Ward 5 get water for only one hour a day. Wells have dried up because of falling groundwater, and tests show bacterial contamination in several of them. Women walk long distances, and water-related diseases, such as diarrhoea and typhoid, are common. The population is increasing with new housing. In view of this, a reliable scheme is urgent.

Objectives: to supply safe water to all households; to reduce water-borne diseases; to make users responsible for the system.

Methodology

  1. Survey and design. Measure the source flow in the dry season, survey the route, count households and estimate demand (45 litres per person per day with a 20-year design period).
  2. Source protection and intake. Build a spring intake and a sedimentation tank.
  3. Pipeline. Lay HDPE pipes of suitable diameter along the route, with valves, air-release and break-pressure tanks.
  4. Reservoir and treatment. Build a 60,000-litre RCC reservoir tank with a chlorination unit.
  5. Distribution. Lay distribution pipes to 30 public taps and house connections with meters.
  6. Community participation. Form a Water Users' Committee; the users will provide unskilled labour and a monthly fee.
  7. Quality control and testing. Pressure tests of the pipes and water quality tests before handover.
  8. Operation and maintenance. Train two local technicians, and fix the tariff to cover maintenance costs.
