Conceptual dependency and primitives

Short answer

Conceptual dependency (CD) uses language-independent primitives and conceptual categories (PP, ACT, PA, AA, T, LOC) to capture meaning. Common primitives: ATRANS (transfer of ownership), PTRANS (physical transfer), MTRANS (mental info), MBUILD (conclude), PROPEL (push), MOVE (body part), GRASP, INGEST, EXPEL, ATTEND, SPEAK. Same-sense sentences map to one structure, e.g., ATRANS from donor to recipient.

What is conceptual dependency? Explain some of the common primitives used in conceptual dependency.

Conceptual dependency (CD), proposed by Roger Schank, is a knowledge representation theory in which the meaning of a sentence is represented by a small set of language-independent primitive acts and conceptual categories, linked by dependency relations. Sentences with the same meaning get the same representation, whatever the wording, so a program can draw inferences without depending on the syntax.

Conceptual categories

  • PP: picture producer (a physical object or person)
  • ACT: an action (one of the primitives)
  • PA: picture aider (attribute of a PP)
  • AA: action aider (attribute of an ACT)
  • T: time, LOC: location

Common primitive acts

PrimitiveMeaningExample
ATRANStransfer of an abstract relationship (ownership, possession)give, take, buy
PTRANStransfer of physical location of an objectgo, walk, drive
MTRANStransfer of mental informationtell, read, see
MBUILDbuild new information from olddecide, conclude
PROPELapply physical force to an objectpush, throw, hit
MOVEmove a body part by its ownerkick, wave
GRASPgrasp an objecthold, clutch
INGESTtake something into the bodyeat, drink
EXPELsend something out of the bodycry, spit
ATTENDfocus a sense organ on a stimuluslisten, look
SPEAKproduce a soundsay, shout

Example

"Ram gave Sita a book."

Ram <=> ATRANS <--o-- book <--R-- (from Ram)
                              (to Sita)

Here the actor is Ram, the act is ATRANS, the object is the book, the donor is Ram and the recipient is Sita. The passive sentence "Sita was given a book by Ram" gives exactly the same CD structure, because it has the same meaning.

Advantages and limits

CD gives canonical forms and supports inference and paraphrasing, but a small set of primitives cannot express all knowledge, and converting text to CD is hard.
