Most efficient leadership style in Nepal
Short answer
Leadership is influencing people willingly toward group goals. For Nepal, a participative democratic style with firm, supportive and transformational leadership is most efficient because it suits Nepali culture, motivates educated youth, improves decisions and builds trust. Autocratic style may be used temporarily for discipline, and free-rein only for experts.
What is leadership? In your opinion, which type of leadership is most efficient in Nepal? Present your views and logic.
Leadership
Leadership is the ability to influence a group of people to willingly strive towards achieving group goals. It involves vision, guidance, motivation and example.
Main styles: autocratic (leader decides alone), democratic/participative (decisions with group), laissez-faire/free-rein (group decides on its own), and others such as paternalistic and transformational.
Most efficient style for Nepal: my view
In my opinion, a participative (democratic) style with a firm, supportive and transformational approach is the most efficient in Nepal, adjusted to the situation.
Logic
- Social culture: Nepali society values respect for seniors, family-like relations and loyalty. Employees respond well to a caring leader who listens, which participative or paternalistic leaders do.
- Educated and young workforce: Youth in IT, banking and engineering want involvement, learning and recognition. Participation motivates them and retains them against foreign migration.
- Quality of decisions: Group ideas improve decisions and acceptance, and reduce resistance.
- Need for commitment and trust: Many organizations suffer from low trust and politicised unions; open communication and fairness are essential.
- Need for discipline in some cases: Pure democracy can slow work where discipline and accountability are weak. So in emergencies, safety-critical work or with unskilled workers, an autocratic style is used temporarily. Example: the firm leadership of Kulman Ghising at NEA brought improved discipline and an end to load shedding while still working with staff.
- Free-rein suits only highly skilled experts, such as research teams.
So the most efficient is a flexible, contingency-based leadership, mainly participative, with strong vision and ethical conduct; the leader should use the autocratic style where discipline is required and the free-rein style for experts.
