Different environments of a project

Short answer

A project is conducted in external (political, economic, social, technological, natural, competitive, financial), task (clients, funders, suppliers, contractors, unions, authorities, community, competitors) and internal (org structure, culture, resources) environments. All influence its planning and execution.

Explain the different environments within which a project needs to be conducted.

A project environment is the set of all internal and external factors, conditions and forces that surround a project and influence its success. It is the context in which the project is planned and carried out.

External environment

ElementInfluence on a project
Political / legalGovernment policy, stability, laws, licences, taxes (e.g. Hydropower policy, Public Procurement Act)
EconomicInflation, interest rates, exchange rate, price of materials, market demand
Social / culturalCommunity acceptance, local participation, resettlement, labour attitude
TechnologicalAvailability of new methods, equipment and skills
Natural / physicalGeology, climate, floods, earthquakes, terrain
CompetitiveCompetitors, alternative suppliers
FinancialBanks, donors, investors, capital market

Task (immediate) environment

Clients, funders, suppliers, contractors, consultants, labour unions, government agencies, local community and competitors. These directly supply resources and affect achievement of objectives, but also impose limits (rules, deadlines, conditions).

Internal environment

Organisation structure, culture, management style, resources and skills of the project team.

A project manager must scan the environment continuously, adapt plans, and manage stakeholders and risks.
