Pavement maintenance and its types

Short answer

Pavement maintenance keeps a pavement in good condition. Types: routine (patching, drain cleaning), recurrent (regrading gravel, resealing cracks), periodic (surface dressing, thin overlay at 3–8 year intervals), urgent (emergency repairs after landslides), preventive (fog seal), and corrective (pothole repair).

Describe pavement maintenance and its types with examples.

Pavement maintenance is all the work that keeps a pavement in good condition during its life. Its types, with examples:

  1. Routine maintenance - small works done every year: patching potholes, crack sealing, cleaning side drains and culverts, clearing vegetation, repairing shoulders.
  2. Recurrent maintenance - works repeated within a year or so: regrading gravel roads, resealing cracks, maintaining signs and markings.
  3. Periodic maintenance - larger works at intervals of 3 to 8 years: resealing, surface dressing, slurry seal, thin overlay, regravelling of gravel roads (as per the Nepal DoR classification).
  4. Urgent (emergency) maintenance - immediate works to restore access after a landslide, flood or accident: removing slips, temporarily repairing a washed-out section.
  5. Preventive maintenance - works done before major damage occurs, such as a fog seal or crack sealing on pavements in good condition.
  6. Corrective maintenance - repairs after a defect has occurred, such as pothole repair.

Rehabilitation (overlay) and reconstruction are major works beyond normal maintenance.
