True stress and engineering stress
Short answer
Engineering stress is load over original area; true stress is load over instantaneous area. Up to necking, true stress = engineering stress × (1 + engineering strain), and true strain = ln(1 + engineering strain). Engineering values are used for design, true values for research.
Define true stress and engineering stress.
Engineering stress
Engineering (nominal) stress is the applied load divided by the original cross-sectional area:
Engineering strain is . It is used in design because is known.
True stress
True stress is the load divided by the instantaneous cross-sectional area at that moment:
True strain is . These conversions assume constant volume and hold up to the start of necking.
| Basis | Engineering | True |
|---|---|---|
| Area used | Original | Instantaneous |
| After necking | Falls | Keeps rising |
| Value | Lower | Higher (in tension) |
| Use | Design | Material research |
