Subject : First quarterly progress report on the Urban
Internet Connectivity Project (January-March 2027)

Introduction

The project aims to provide free Wi-Fi in 25 public places and high-speed fibre internet in 15 wards of the city. It started on 1 January 2027 and will run for 12 months. This is the first quarterly report.

Work completed

1. The survey and design were completed; the locations of the 25 hotspots and a 42 km fibre route were finalised.
2. The contract for fibre and equipment was signed with a registered ISP in February.
3. 14 km of ducts were laid, and 6 km of fibre was installed.
4. Four hotspots were set up, at Patan Durbar Square, Pulchowk, Jawalakhel and the bus park, and they serve 300 users a day.
5. A network control room was established at the municipal office.
6. A user registration portal is being tested.
7. Expenditure: Rs. 1.2 crore (24 percent of the budget).

Problems faced

• Delays in getting permits to dig roads in the core areas.
• Some hotspot locations had to be changed because there was no power supply.

Work planned for the next period

1. Complete 20 km of fibre and 8 more hotspots.
2. Train municipal staff in network operation.
3. Test the speed and coverage, and conduct a user survey.

Conclusion

The project has completed 25 percent of its work against the plan of 28 percent. We are confident that the project will be completed within the planned time.
