Construction of Kali Gandaki Suspension Bridge (1 to 31
January 2027)
Introduction
The 180 m long and 2 m wide suspension bridge over the Kali Gandaki River at Beni is being built to connect two settlements that have no safe crossing. The contract was awarded to Himalayan Builders Pvt. Ltd. at a cost of Rs. 2.4 crore, with a completion period of 12 months. Work started on 1 January 2027.
This report covers the first month, whose objectives were mobilisation, survey and foundation work.
Work completed
- Mobilisation: the contractor set up the camp, store and office, and 28 workers and two machines arrived on site.
- Survey and design check: the topographic and geotechnical surveys were completed. The design of the towers and cables was checked and approved by the department.
- Excavation: the excavation for the east anchorage was completed (100 percent), and the west anchorage is 60 percent excavated.
- Materials: 400 bags of cement, 8 tonnes of steel, and sand and aggregate were stored. The main cables will be ordered after the test report.
- Quality tests: soil bearing tests and trial-mix concrete cube tests were carried out and found satisfactory.
- Safety: safety helmets and life jackets were provided, and a safety briefing was held.
| Item | Target | Achieved |
|---|---|---|
| Mobilisation | 100% | 100% |
| Survey and design | 100% | 100% |
| Anchorage excavation | 100% | 80% |

Problems faced
- The river level was higher than expected after unseasonal rain, which delayed the work on the west bank for four days.
- The road access to the site is narrow, so heavy materials arrive late.
- There is a shortage of skilled steel workers.
Work planned for the next period
- Complete the west anchorage excavation and begin concreting both anchorages.
- Start the foundations of the towers.
- Place the order for the main cables and hangers.
- Arrange a temporary improvement of the site access.
Conclusion
The overall progress at the end of January is 12 percent, against the plan of 14 percent. With extra labour and better planning, the work is expected to catch up with the plan by the end of February. The quality and safety of the work are satisfactory.
