Introduction

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the ability of machines to perform tasks that normally need human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning and understanding language. Since the arrival of tools such as ChatGPT in 2022, AI has quickly entered schools and universities. It is used for tutoring, translation, writing support, grading and managing learning data. In a country like Nepal, where teachers are few in remote areas and classes are large, AI offers new possibilities. At the same time, it raises serious questions of fairness, privacy and honesty.

The purpose of this report is to describe the main opportunities that AI brings to education and the ethical challenges it creates, and to suggest how they can be managed. The report is based on a review of books, journal articles and policy documents. It focuses on secondary and higher education and does not cover the technical design of AI systems.

Conclusions

  1. AI can improve education by providing personalised learning, instant feedback and support for students with disabilities, and by reducing routine work for teachers.
  2. The risks are also real: cheating and loss of original thinking, bias in algorithms, misinformation, collection of student data without consent, and unequal access to devices and the internet.
  3. AI should support teachers, not replace them. Human judgement, care and ethics remain essential in education.
  4. Students and teachers need AI literacy to use these tools critically and honestly.
  5. Institutions should adopt clear policies on the acceptable use of AI, data protection and academic honesty.
  6. Without action to improve access, AI may widen the gap between urban and rural learners in Nepal.

In short, the benefits of AI in education can be achieved only if it is used responsibly, openly and fairly.
