Pointing versus plastering
Short answer
Pointing fills only masonry joints with mortar to protect them and expose the surface, while plastering covers the entire wall surface to protect it and provide a smooth finish.
Differentiate between pointing works and plaster works.
| Point | Pointing | Plastering |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Finishing of joints of masonry with better mortar | Covering of the whole wall surface with mortar |
| Area covered | Joints only | Entire surface |
| Mortar thickness | 12-20 mm deep in joints | 12-20 mm over the wall |
| Used on | Exposed brick and stone masonry | Walls and ceilings (internal and external) |
| Purpose | Protect joints and show masonry | Protect wall, hide defects, give a smooth finish |
| Mortar | Cement-sand 1:3 or lime mortar | Cement-sand 1:4 / 1:6 |
| Cost | Cheaper | More costly |
| Appearance | Brick or stone texture is visible | Brick or stone is hidden |
