Role of Nepal Engineers' Association

Short answer

I am only partly satisfied with NEA's role. It has promoted unity, technical exchange, advocacy, and welfare, but it is weakened by party politics, weak ethics enforcement, and limited direct welfare. It should become independent, enforce ethics with NEC, promote research and CPD, and build real welfare schemes.

Recently Nepal Engineer's Association (NEA) celebrated its golden jubilee years 2069. In this regard, are you satisfied with role played by NEA in enhancing and upgrading engineering profession and welfare of the engineering till date or not? Justify your thoughts.

My view is that NEA has done valuable work as a professional body, but I am only partly satisfied: it has done more for unity and technical exchange than for the real welfare and standards of engineers.

Positive contributions

  • Unity and voice: NEA brings engineers of all disciplines together and speaks for the profession before the government, for example in policy discussions on the Engineering Council Act, public procurement and engineers' service conditions.
  • Professional upgrading: it organises conventions, seminars, trainings and publishes journals and papers, so engineers can share knowledge.
  • Advocacy: it has raised issues of project quality, delays, transparency and the proper use of engineers in development works.
  • Welfare and recognition: it supports members through social activities, helps during disasters (such as the 2072 earthquake) and gives awards.
  • Link with the Council and institutions: it cooperates with NEC, universities and international bodies.

Weaknesses

  • Influence of party politics in elections, so the association is sometimes divided.
  • Weak action on ethics: unfair competition, low consultancy fees, poor quality and corruption continue.
  • Limited direct welfare: no strong insurance, pension or legal support for members; little research.
  • Needs more work with young engineers and with private-sector and IT engineers.

Conclusion

NEA has played an important role in 50 years, but it should become more independent of politics, enforce ethics with NEC, promote research and CPD, and build real welfare schemes. With these, it can better uphold and upgrade the profession.
