Intelligent agent requirements

Short answer

Minimum requirements for an agent are autonomy, perception, action and goal-directed behaviour. To be intelligent it must also be reactive, proactive, social, learning and capable of reasoning. An email filtering agent perceives mail, acts, reacts, learns from user marks and interacts with other agents.

Prepare a note on intelligent agents with listing of minimum requirement versus the specific requirements to be called in as intelligent agent for any software code piece. Justify your answer with sample example.

Intelligent agents

An intelligent agent is a software program that senses its environment through inputs, makes decisions, and performs actions autonomously to meet goals, possibly learning from experience.

 Environment --percepts--> [ AGENT ] --actions--> Environment
                           (reasoning, goals)

Minimum requirement vs specific requirements

Not every program is an agent. A piece of code must meet a minimum requirement to be an agent, and specific (intelligence) requirements to be called intelligent.

LevelProperties
Minimum (basic agent)Autonomy - runs without constant human control; Perception - senses the environment (input, events); Action - acts on the environment / user; Goal-directed behaviour
Specific (intelligent)Reactivity - responds in time to changes; Proactiveness - takes initiative to achieve goals; Social ability - communicates with users and other agents; Learning/adaptivity - improves from experience; Reasoning (rules, inference) and knowledge base; Mobility (optional) - moves across networks; Rationality, persistence and veracity

A simple scheduled script that copies files only has autonomy and action, so it is just a program. A program that senses and decides is an agent. One that also learns and plans is an intelligent agent.

Example: email filtering agent

  • Perceives each incoming email (sender, subject, content).
  • Acts by moving mail to spam, inbox or priority folders (autonomous, runs in background).
  • Reactive - classifies messages as soon as they arrive.
  • Proactive - alerts the user to an urgent message or unsubscribe suggestions.
  • Learning - when the user marks a message as spam, it updates its model.
  • Social - interacts with the user and with a calendar agent to add meeting events.

Another example: a shopping agent that watches product prices and buys when the price falls below a limit.
