BoQ for NITC four research labs

Short answer

For 96 PCs plus 4 APs, estimate 100 CAT6 drops at 35 m average, giving 3,850 m and 13 boxes. Use 100 faceplates, 5 patch panels, 4 access switches plus 1 PoE switch, and 1 core L3 switch. Assign each lab a /27 subnet from 192.168.10.0/24.

NITC building had 4 research labs each having 24 computers. All labs are located at the 1st floor. Each computer is to be connected in the network from NCR located at 2nd floor. Prepare a bill of quantity (BoQ) with necessary network resources required for complete networking. The BoQ must include estimation of all network resources required.

Assumptions

  • 4 labs x 24 computers = 96 computers, all on the 1st floor. The Network Control Room (NCR) is on the 2nd floor, directly above.
  • One single-port CAT6 outlet per computer, plus 1 wireless AP per lab (4 drops). Total drops = 96 + 4 = 100.
  • Floor height 4 m; horizontal run about 28 m; plus slack: average cable run per drop = 35 m (under the 90 m limit).
  • 10% wastage on cable. Cable box = 305 m. Switches are 24-port GE with SFP uplinks. The NCR also needs a router/firewall for the internet link.

Quantity estimation

  1. Outlets (single-port faceplate with jack): 96 + 4 = 100.
  2. Cable length: 100 x 35 = 3,500 m. With 10% wastage = 3,850 m. Boxes = 3,850 / 305 = 12.6, so 13 boxes.
  3. Patch panel ports = 100. 100 / 24 = 4.2, so 5 patch panels (24-port).
  4. Switches: 96 PC ports / 24 = 4 switches fully used, plus 1 PoE switch for the 4 APs and spare ports = 5 access switches. One core L3 switch connects them to the router = 1.
  5. Patch cords: user side 2 m = 100; panel to switch 1 m = 100; switch to core 1 m = 5. Total 205.
  6. Rack space: 5 panels (5U) + 5 switches (5U) + core (1U) + router/firewall (1U) + cable managers (4U) + UPS (2U) = 18U, so one 24U or 42U rack.

Each /27 has 30 usable hosts, enough for 24 PCs and a gateway with spare addresses. The core L3 switch routes between the subnets, and the router provides DHCP (through DHCP relay on the core) and NAT to the internet.
