Introduction

Nation-building means developing the economic, social and physical base of a country so that its citizens can enjoy a good life. In Nepal, after the end of the monarchy, the earthquake of 2015 and the shift to federalism, there is a great demand for development. Engineers have a central place in this work.

Roles of engineers

  1. Infrastructure: civil engineers design and build roads, bridges, airports, irrigation systems and buildings that connect people and markets. Strong buildings built to the building code save lives in earthquakes.
  2. Energy: electrical and mechanical engineers develop hydropower, solar systems and transmission lines. The completion of projects such as Upper Tamakoshi has made Nepal self-reliant in power during the wet season.
  3. Information technology: computer and electronics engineers develop software, networks, digital payments and e-governance systems that make services faster.
  4. Industry and agriculture: engineers introduce machines, quality control and new processes, adding value to local products.
  5. Environment and disaster management: they plan water supply, waste management, flood control and safe settlements.
  6. Research and education: they teach, innovate and make use of local resources and technology.
  7. Leadership and ethics: as managers and public officials, engineers should be honest, avoid corruption and give priority to public safety.

Challenges

Engineers face many challenges: many leave the country, public projects are delayed and their costs rise because of poor planning and corruption, research funds are insufficient, and technical decisions are sometimes influenced by politics.

Conclusion

Engineers are the builders of the nation. For their role to be effective, the country should create a good working environment, respect professional standards and invest in research. Engineers, in turn, must be competent, honest and committed to serving the people.
