                        MEMORANDUM

To : Dr. Sabita Joshi, Head of Department, Department
of Computer Engineering
From : Rohit Karki, 5th Semester Student
Date : 25 November 2026
Subject : Report on the visit to Mountain Publication
House, Kathmandu

Purpose of the trip

On 20 November 2026, a group of 30 students from our department visited Mountain Publication House, Teku, to observe the process of publishing books and the use of technology in it, as part of our Communication English course.

Observations

  1. Editorial section: the editors receive manuscripts, check them for language and facts, and decide whether to publish them. Editing is done on computers using tracked changes.
  2. Design and layout: designers use desktop publishing software (InDesign) to design the pages, covers and graphics, and they send proofs to the authors.
  3. Printing section: modern offset machines print books in four colours; digital printers are used for short runs.
  4. Binding and finishing: machines cut, fold and bind the books, and the quality is checked at every step.
  5. Distribution and marketing: the stock room uses a computerised inventory, and the company sells through bookstores and an online shop.
  6. Technology: the company also publishes e-books and uses a content management system.

Findings

  • The firm is well organised and mostly paperless in editing.
  • The staff are skilled, but the printing machines are noisy and dusty, and not everyone wore a safety mask.
  • The company faces competition from imported books and from online piracy.

Recommendations

  1. Similar visits should be organised for students every year.
  2. The department could cooperate with publishers to print its own lab manuals.
  3. The firm should supply earplugs and masks, and adopt more environment-friendly paper.

I thank the managing director and the staff for their warm reception and the information they gave us.
